Shipping electronics can be a cause for worry; there’s always the risk of damage in transit. Electrical products are particularly difficult to ship – many shipping companies won’t insure them most of the time as they are fragile in nature.

However, it’s not impossible to safely ship your electronic product. In this post, we share some safety tips for packaging electronic products.

Use the Right Sized Box

Give a thought to the type and size of box you will use to package your electronic product. Avoid using a box that is too small; your product will need some room after it has been wrapped and packaged. Be sure to pick a cardboard box that is sturdy, thick and can take pressure.

This is crucial because if the package is stacked beneath other boxes, it could crumple under the weight, which can damage the product inside.

The Packaging

Start by taking any antistatic measures necessary. This will be needed for individual components. Antistatic bubble pouches, antistatic self-seal bags or antistatic tubing are all good options.

There are many ways to pack your electricals. Bubble wrap and void fill systems are some of the best materials for packaging electrical. Bubble wrap is available in 3 different bubble sizes – small bubbles for light and fragile items, medium bubbles for less delicate and larger items and large bubbles for filling up space.

Wrap the bubble sheet around the electronic item several times. However, not so much that the customer cannot get the item out without unintentionally breaking it. Use sellotape to tape the bubble wrap, as it is easier to remove compared to parcel tape.

Void fill systems help fill up the box to ensure your product does not move around in and break while in transit. Fill up 2 to 3 inches of the box with void fill before placing the item. Now cover fill up the remaining space with more layers of void fill. Tripak offers Pillopax and Kraft Paper void fill systems.

If you are shipping fragile goods, it’s wise to double box. Find a box that’s slightly bigger than the first one (allowing a gap of 1- to 2-inch gap around the edges) and fill the bottom with a layer of void fill.

Now place the first box inside the second one and fill any surrounding gaps with void fill. Now secure the box with tape.

The Label

Although your shipping company may put their best efforts to ship your package safely, it’s always better to place a reminder right onto the box. It helps avoid any mistreatment during transit and you’re all set.

Use ‘handle with care’ or ‘fragile’ stickers on the box. If your product must be left or opened up a specific way, use “this way up” stickers.
