Logistics and courier firms routinely secure documents, parcels, and packages with packing tapes before transhipping them. Since these consignments are handled and inspected at several checkpoints across the transhipment route, they’re extremely vulnerable to tampering or pilferage.

Using high quality security tapes such as barrier seals and gummed tapes adds a robust layer of security to shipments, diminishing the chances of meddling and theft. Tripak Ltd has been supplying quality packaging solutions including tamper-evident tapes and printed gummed paper tapes worldwide since 1980.

What Are Security Seals?

The use of security seals can be traced back to the ancient Egyptian civilisation. Pharaohs used official stamps carved out of wood, metal, and stone to seal valuable documents and packages. The recipient could tell immediately if the parcel or document had been tampered with by comparing the seal’s imprint with the original impression.

Fast forward to the early 1900s, when many firms pioneered the use of different types of mechanical seals for securing messenger bags, parcel vans, and railcars. These seals were chiefly constructed from tinplate or steel. With time, a variety of security seals burgeoned.

Starting from the mid-20th century, mechanicals seals of different sizes and shapes made of wires, heavy metal and plastics began to be used heavily. Robust security seals ranging from heavy-duty iron and steel seals to standard plastic seals effectively thwarted unauthorised meddling.

The latest developments in the packaging consumables industry include tamper-sensitive printed paper gummed water activated tape, adhesive tapes and labels, holographic images, barcoded seals and seal presses.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of using security tapes and seals.

Discourages Tampering

Although plastic tapes, glues or staples can help seal your packages conveniently and quickly, these packing products can easily come undone.

Plastic tapes and seals are not tamperproof, and hence do not leave behind any evidence of pilferage or tinkering. Alternatively, a reinforced security tape such as a water-activated gummed tape or printed adhesive tape imparts exceptional protection to the carton’s contents.

A water-activated printed gummed paper or waterproof cloth tape creates a near-indestructible bond between the carton and the adhesive. A crisscrossed pattern of fibreglass strands coated in between dual layers of waterproof cloth or paper produces the bonding.

On activating the gummed tape with water, an unbreakable bond is formed between the corrugate and the tape, thereby sealing the package permanently.

Extremely Robust and Hardy

A security tape or seal is designed and manufactured in a manner that makes it sturdier than standardised packaging tapes. On application, adhesive tapes and security seals confers a strong security to the package, making it extremely tamper-resistant.

Resistant to Inclement Weather and Temperature

A security seal, unlike an ordinary packaging tape, can tolerate extreme temperatures or inclement weather without losing its effectiveness.

Cost-Effective

Just a single strip of gummed security tape would suffice for effectively sealing a package compared to three strips of plastic tape. Evidently, gummed tapes and seals are more cost-effective than pressure-susceptive tapes.

Brand Promotion

A high-security tape printed with the name and logo of your company can go a long way in promoting your brand.
